“Ray And His Court”

マイアミのキューバンミュージックシーンの重鎮、Ray Fernandezがアフロキューバンファンクの傑作の為に築いた彼の「宮廷」は、Ray Fernandezの妻と二人の息子、現代ジャズ界の巨匠Kamasi Washingtonの父であるサックス奏者Rickey Washingtonらをメンバーに迎えRay And His Courtが1973年にリリースしたセルフタイトルアルバムが、イギリス・ブライトンを拠点とする旧作・名作ワールドミュージック復刻の名門インディペンデントレーベルMr.Bongoによりリイシュー。 A面は「La Senorita Lola」からの魅惑的なオープニング、「Lo Sabia」、「Venimos Acabando」、「El Alacran」と続き、B面はDJ ShadowをはじめとしたDJたちのサンプリングで名を馳せる「Soul Freedom」など、サルサ、ソウル、ファンク、カリプソ、そしてアフロキューバンのリズムを巧みに取り入れた燃えるマイアミキューバン魂を凝縮した一枚。

A cornerstone of Miami’s Cuban music scene, Ray Fernandez built his “court” for the creation of Afro-Cuban funk masterpieces. Featuring his wife and two sons, as well as saxophonist Rickey Washington—father of modern jazz giant Kamasi Washington—Ray And His Court released their self-titled album in 1973. This landmark record has now been reissued by Mr. Bongo, the prestigious independent label based in Brighton, UK, renowned for its reissues of classic and rare world music.

Side A opens with the enchanting “La Señorita Lola”, followed by “Lo Sabía”, “Venimos Acabando”, and “El Alacrán”. Side B features tracks like “Soul Freedom”, famously sampled by DJs including DJ Shadow. Combining salsa, soul, funk, calypso, and Afro-Cuban rhythms, this album distills the fiery spirit of Miami’s Cuban scene into one essential release.

Kamalesh Maitra
“Raag Kirwani on Tabla Tarang”

インドの古典音楽家、作曲家、教師であった伝説の最後のタブラ名手Kamalesh Maitraの未発表音源がオーストラリアのBlack Truffleよりリリース。且つてはRavi Shankar率いるアンサンブルでの演奏、George Harrisonともコラボレートしたパンディットと称される彼による、東西の音楽を融合させた自身のグループRagatala Ensembleを率い、自主リリースしたLP『Tabla Tarang: Ragas on Drums』の制作と同年の1985年にベルリンでのセッションを収録した今作。パンディットによる40分以上にもわたる演奏、タブラで奏でる即興の妙技を収録。

Previously unreleased recordings by Kamalesh Maitra, the legendary master of the tabla and one of the last great virtuosos of the instrument, are released by Australia’s Black Truffle label.

A revered Indian classical musician, composer, and teacher, Maitra—honored with the title Pandit—performed as part of Ravi Shankar’s ensemble and collaborated with George Harrison. He also led his own group, the Ragatala Ensemble, through which he explored a synthesis of Eastern and Western musical traditions.

This release documents a session recorded in Berlin in 1985, the same year Maitra independently released his LP “Tabla Tarang: Ragas on Drums.” Spanning over 40 minutes, the recording captures the Pandit’s extraordinary improvisational mastery on the tabla, revealing the depth and dynamism of his approach to rhythm.

A highly anticipated reissue of the rare Brazilian samba-soul rare groove album “LOTUS 72 D” by Ze Roberto, released by Mr. Bongo, the prestigious independent label based in Brighton, UK, renowned for its reissues of classic and rare world music.

This album has only been reissued once before, by a devoted Brazilian dealer, and original pressings are famously scarce and trade at very high prices on the collectors’ market. Long regarded as a holy grail of Brazilian rare groove, it has remained out of reach for many fans.

This new edition goes even further, featuring on the B-side the FAST VERSION of the same track—originally included in the early-2000s Brazilian compilation “Viva Brazil,” where it gained cult status. A truly essential release for fans and collectors alike.

Super Djata Band, led by Zani Diabaté, was one of the most celebrated bands active in Mali, West Africa, during the 1980s. Drawing from the hunting music of the Wasulu, the praise songs of the griots, the pastoral dances of the Senufo, and the repertoires of the Fula and Mandingo peoples, their style also incorporated Western elements such as psychedelic rock, blues, and Afrobeat, establishing them as one of Mali’s premier orchestras.

This release is a reissue of their 1981 recording, showcasing the magical sounds of virtuosic psychedelic electric guitar, infectious Afro rhythms, and bluesy flair—a masterpiece that captures the band’s extraordinary musical fusion.

“DRUMLAND DREAMLAND”

ジンバブエ・ハラレ生まれ、1959年にロンドンに移住し70年代ブリクストン・スクワット運動に参加、独学でドラムを学んだLori Vambeにより1982年に自主レーベルDrumony Recordsからリリースされたホームレコーディング作品2枚のうちの一枚『Drumland Dreamland』。逆再生やオーバーダビングを駆使し四次元へのアクセスを目指したとされ、共鳴胴に見立てた打楽器のボディにギターやベースのネックを直結した「Drumgita」若しくは「Stringdrum」と名付けた自作楽器を民族音楽のように爪弾き、ブラジル人ピアニストRafael Dos Santosの美しいピアノの旋律がマリアージュされる。スピリチュアルでプリミティヴ、時にコズミックさも感じる神秘的な世界観を表出している。

"Drumland Dreamland" is one of two home-recorded works released in 1982 on the self-run label Drumony Records by Lori Vambe, a musician born in Harare, Zimbabwe, who moved to London in 1959, took part in the Brixton squat movement of the 1970s, and taught himself how to play the drums. Making extensive use of reverse tape effects and overdubbing, the album was said to aim at accessing a “fourth dimension.”

Vambe plucks his own handmade instruments—known as the “Drumgita” or “Stringdrum,” in which guitar or bass necks are directly attached to percussion bodies conceived as resonant chambers—in a manner reminiscent of traditional ethnic music. These sounds are beautifully interwoven with the piano melodies of Brazilian pianist Rafael Dos Santos. The album reveals a mystical world imbued with spirituality and primitivism, at times evoking a distinctly cosmic sensibility.

“EXUMA”

1960年代初頭にNYグリニッジヴィレッジに移住し、その地域で発展しつつあったフォークロックシーンで活動を始めたバハマ出身のミュージシャンExumaによる1970年リリースのファーストアルバム。カリブのJunkanooリズム、アフロカリビアン、サイケデリックフォークが融合した独自のサウンドスタイルを形成し、ボンゴや太鼓、ベル、チャイムなどの打楽器を中心に構成され、リチュアリスティックでシャーマニズムなムードが漂う。アルバムタイトル曲の「Exuma, the Obeah Man」では自身を「Obeah Man」と位置づけ、カリブの伝統呪術的民間信仰と音楽の中でその神秘性、霊性、超常性を関連付けた。ジャンルを超越し音と言霊の融合を果たしたフリーキングフォークの傑作。

Released in 1970, this is the debut album by Exuma, a Bahamian musician who moved to Greenwich Village, New York, in the early 1960s and began his career within the emerging folk-rock scene there. Blending Caribbean Junkanoo rhythms, Afro-Caribbean elements, and psychedelic folk, the album forges a highly distinctive sound. Its arrangements are built primarily around percussion instruments such as bongos, drums, bells, and chimes, creating a ritualistic, shamanistic atmosphere.

In the album’s title track, “Exuma, the Obeah Man,” Exuma positions himself as an “Obeah Man,” linking the music to the mysticism, spirituality, and supernatural aspects of traditional Caribbean folk magic. Transcending genre boundaries, the album stands as a masterpiece of freak-folk, achieving a powerful fusion of sound and incantatory word.
